Chevy Spark and Sonic First To Cars To Integrate Siri

Today Chevrolet officially announced the new Spark and Sonic cars, both due in 2013, will integrate Apple's voice recognition software, Siri. In order to use Siri with the cars the owner must have an iPhone 4S or 5 running iOS 6.

In the Spark and Sonic RS, owners can use Siri in the Eyes Free mode to:

  • Make voice-activated, hands-free calls to Contacts on their iPhone
  • Play songs in the iTunes library, and even switch music sources automatically from AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode
  • Listen to, and compose and send an iMessage or text message to a phone number or anyone in saved Contacts
  • Access Calendar and add appointments
  • Minimize distraction even more by keeping the screen of the iPhone from lighting up, even when Siri answers simple questions such as game scores or the dates of national holidays
  • While in Eyes Free mode, Siri will not provide answers to complex questions that require displaying a web page

During Apple's June 2012 World-Wide Developers Conference, Apple announced Siri would be incorporated into cars starting in 2013, and showcased an impressive lineup of nine manufacturers including: BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda. Absent from the list were three other major participants, Ford, Hyundai and Kia, as all three use a variant of Microsoft technology which Ford brands as Sync or My Ford Touch. Needless to say, Ford has received poor vehicle reviews due to Microsoft integration.

Specific Chevy models that will incorporate Siri are the Chevrolet Spark 1LT and 2LT, and the Sonic LTZ and RS models. Both vehicles will be available in the first half of 2013.
