Mac_pro_pricingWishing for Santa to deliver a new Mac Pro for Christmas? Well, at least the ability to order one started this morning, but they won't be arriving into studios and power users hands until February.

There are two configurations for the Mac Pro, starting at $2,999 for a quad-core system, and $3,999 for the six-core powerhouse. But this is just the entry point for a configuration. We started configuring the high-end model and maxed out with a price of $14,959.98. A Mac Pro or Kia Soul, take your pick. Maybe get one of each.

There are many accessories to add onto the price, but we tried to stick with the reasonable "bare bones" of the system, but were sure to add in accessories to make the Mac Pro a fully functional video editing system. Here is how we arrived at Soul pricing:

  • Mac Pro: $3,999
  • 2.7GHz 12-core with 30MB of L3 cache: $3,000
  • 64GB (4x16GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC: $1,200
  • 1TB PCIe-based flash storage: $800
  • Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each: $600
  • Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch): $999.00
  • Sharp 32" PN-K321 - 4K Ultra HD LED Monitor: $3,595
  • Apple Magic Mouse: $69
  • Apple Wireless Keyboard: $49.00
  • Final Cut Pro X: $49.00
  • Aperture: $79.99
  • AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro: $249

There are many additional items that could be added, but for base video editing functionality, with a heavy dose of all-things power, we preferred this overkill solution. Your pricing may vary.
