Synonymous with Kleenex, Apple, Google and Amazon have become household names, and it has only taken a decade for them to do so.
Apple’s rebirth via iPod, iPhone and iPad have forced the entire technology industry to follow their lead. Google’s search prowess has taken them well beyond anything they thought possible in just a few short years ago, and Amazon’s reach has moved from online retailer to hardware and content provider.
Will Apple hold a special event within the next few weeks? When Apple produced a special event is something Apple once made an absolute science. In the past, CES would come and go, and then Apple would swoop in the following week with their own special event, sucking the media attention completely away from the varied vaporware revealed in Las Vegas.
Over the past three years, Apple has shifted to holding more events in March, June or the fall timeframe, largely ignoring CES — as if irrelevant to the industry, and certainly to Apple. Apple may be on target with ignoring CES, as it is often nothing more than a lot of hype and spec. sheets, with little for anyone to tangibly buy into for the new year.
Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone in the U.S. (and Canada), Christmas magic is in the air. Cyber Monday is today. Many retailers very survival often depends on sales during the next four weeks — although I highly doubt this is what the wise men had in mind when bringing gifts to the Christ child.
Nevertheless, the world we live in is full of anticipation — for the next big thing. And Apple fans are no different. While we have seen new versions of most of our favorites, only the new Mac Pro broke the mold and gave us something truly new and exciting. Everything else — iPhones, iPads, Macs — have all been improvements on the same theme. Arguably the iPad Air could be considered an exception as it really did make some big advancements.
IDC’s latest market share numbers are figures should make Android's Mom proud. Roughly 81% of the world during the September 2013 quarter picked purchased some type of Android smartphone. Meanwhile, Apple saw a decline in share from 14.4% to roughly 13% during the same year-over-year quarter.
Apple's new and revolutionary anti-pricing for operating systems, creative and productivity software isn't revolutionary or new, and it certainly isn't free. These are the claims from a slew of Microsoft apologists.
"Though users can cheer the free operating system now, the move also gives Apple more leeway to charge premium prices for its upcoming gadgets," stated MarketWatch's Quentin Fottrell. Morningstar research firm's Brian Coletto believes Apple will be charging a premium on hardware, making up for the giveaway of free software. "Apple has taken the strategy of giving its software away for free in order to improve the customer’s user experience and spur the purchase of premium hardware. It’s a clear contrast to Amazon, which appears to be selling its tablets at close to cost, in order to drive media and content purchases,” he says.
Rumors are running rampant of Apple releasing an all-new Apple TV device at the company’s September 22, special event, being held off campus at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The event is assumed to focus on Apple’s new lineup of iPads, however, a major venue like this suggests something beyond a mere product refresh.
Specifics as to why Apple would need to revised Apple TV with all new hardware is unknown, but one possibility could be Apple's preparation to support 4K resolution. 4K, or UHD (Ultra High Definition), is essentially double the x and y axis resolution of the 1080p specification. Whether this resolution is in demand or not makes little difference, as major display manufacturers are making a major push to release the UHD displays this holiday season. If Apple delivers a 4K Apple TV with content from the iTunes store (albeit limited content), Apple will significantly differentiate itself from the other players in the industry, such as Roku or Google's Chromecast dongle solution.
Apple's first Special Event of the season arrived on September 10, unveiling all new iPhones and iOS 7. The next big thing from Cupertino, if rumors prove to be accurate, will take place on Tuesday, October 15, at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, announcing all-new iPads. But there appears to be another event Apple is preparing before year's end.
Apple is not known for cramming multiple special events into a single season, and technically speaking, the third event is said to land in November, but three launch events for Apple in consecutive months will be an unprecedented move for the tech giant.
